Once you’re happy, we can move ahead to stage two and this is where the major correction and restoration occurs. In the first stage, we worked on reducing the pain and allowing the first steps towards some form of equilibrium within the body. As the care progresses, we work towards a balance and dealing with the pain at the source. As we’ve seen, medication can be effective for removing pain but it doesn’t deal with the core issue and this is where stage two begins.
To start, we can work on correcting the muscles and tissue to promote healing. At the same time, we consider alignment within the spine and keep this at the forefront of all treatment. Of course, we also focus on any areas you’ve been struggling with whether it’s the knee, shoulder, or perhaps another joint in your body.
During this phase, we want to boost all function until you reach 100% of your potential and how your body ‘should’ be performing. By removing the inefficiencies, we promote overall wellbeing as opposed to just fixing one area.
Importance of Chiropractic Corrective Care
Before we launch into what you can expect at this phase and how the corrective care is achieved, we should first note the importance of corrective care and we’ve touched upon it already. With medication, you get a relief from the pain but the relief is only temporary and will never really fix the issue. Over time, the relief lasts for a shorter time until you eventually become somewhat immune to the effects of painkillers and there are no solutions left.
With your Plantation chiropractor, it’s all about correcting the issue that’s been causing all the problems. Whether it’s misalignment in the spine, neck, shoulder, or any other location, this will need to be fixed before anything else otherwise the pain will just keep returning. If you were to wallpaper over cracks on the wall, it might provide temporary relief in terms of aesthetics but you’ve still got a crack that needs dealing with and this is the same principle for these types of injuries.
Chiropractic Corrective Process
With the basics covered, how does the corrective process begin with your chiropractor in Plantation? Ultimately, the techniques used will differ depending on your injury and the location of the injury. However, there are some general methods used and it doesn’t just include manipulation (although this is where we’re going to start!).
Chiropractic Biophysics - As you would imagine, chiropractic techniques will make up the bulk of the corrective phase and the most common will be CBP (Chiropractic Biophysics). These days, CBP has been tested extensively and it’s the most-researched section of chiropractic care within the industry. When looking to restore proper bio-mechanics function, improve posture, reduce neck/back pain, and restore the normal curve, CBP has a lot of promise.
In simple terms, the technique very much follows the same line of thinking as an orthodontist when correcting your teeth. When all is said and done, the main aim is to straighten the teeth so they can function as normal and the owner doesn’t experience any pain or discomfort. By using spinal traction, along with mirror image adjusting protocols, our main aim is to straighten the spine and get it into a more natural position. By doing this, it has a direct impact on the rest of the body including the neck and it should alleviate pain and discomfort.
Over the course of a number of weeks, we keep performing this technique and, little by little, the spine will move back to a natural position and the pain will decrease each time. At the end, we normally take new x-rays to compare them with what we had before and you should see a clear difference in positioning. At all times, CBP has three main goals:
- Firstly, it aims to restore the natural position of the spine to remove the possibility of degeneration and decrease abnormal weight distribution.
- Secondly, a unique exercise program will be developed for each patient and the needs of the spine. If there are some areas weaker than others, the exercises cement the adjustment work being done and this allows for sustainable results.
- Thirdly, the traction looks to essentially retrain the spine and remodel what’s considered ‘normal’. Over the years, the spine is likely to have been put through postural distortions so CBP will correct these in a way that won’t see the problem return in a week.
Gonstead Adjustment - In addition to CBP, we also commonly use the Gonstead Adjustment technique and this is made up of two parts; analyzing and adjusting. When analyzing, which can be done during Phase 1 of this process, we use x-rays, static palpation, visualization, instrumentation, and motion palpation. Throughout this technique, attention to detail is very important because the goal is to isolate the affected joint. With less rotation and twisting, this is a more comfortable technique for all patients while still yielding the same result.
Diversified Adjustment - If your case requires, and most typically do, we’ll generally start with a diversified adjustment and this is the third and final traditional method used by chiropractors in Plantation for many decades. Essentially, it starts with finding a bone that isn't in the healthy and natural position. Since degeneration and arthritis begins whenever a spinal segment is stuck, it’s important to correct the issue otherwise pain will start in the back before then spreading to the neck and other body parts.
Corrective Exercises - With the three main corrective techniques used nowadays, we should also point out that a significant amount of the work is also done outside the office and this is important to remember. If you receive treatment and make no changes to your lifestyle in between appointments, you aren't utilizing the high level of care on offer. If you want to experience the best possible results, you need to spend your time away from the office carefully.
As you may have guessed from the title of this section, corrective exercises are an important place to start. Once the corrective phase is underway, we like to coach you through the weeks ahead and this includes certain exercises you can do at home to solidify the work we do in the office. As mentioned earlier, the exercises we recommend will be unique to you depending on the extent of the health problem and where the issue is located.
Just like you might be asked to do some stretches and exercises at home when in rehab after an injury, Plantation chiropractors are the same and it helps you to see results in a much quicker time. As you make progress, there’ll be a snowball effect where improvement speeds up over the weeks. Although the first few weeks may be slow, it soon improves (we’re going to talk more about this at the end).
Lifestyle Advice - Once the corrective exercises are in place, we then need to think about your lifestyle and how we can ensure the corrective techniques and exercises work without being held back. Of course, we would never judge the way in which you lead your life but there are certain things you should avoid. As before, we appreciate that we’re all unique so we’ll sit down with you and discuss your job, habits, hobbies, and create a plan that will allow for full recovery.
Let’s not forget, the aim of the corrective stage is to repair the damage already caused and it’s only for a number of weeks. If you can look after yourself as much as possible during these few weeks, you should be free from pain and discomfort for a number of years to come.
Diet and Nutrition - Next up, we’ll also advise on how you can eat well while improving your overall health at the same time. In the typical Western diet, we tend to eat a lot of unhealthy foods and this has a number of negative impacts on our bodies. For one thing, we don’t get the nutrients we need for bones, tissues, muscles, and all body parts to function as required. For example, an increase in calcium during the corrective phase can be incredibly helpful as it improves bone health and allows nutrients into the bones.
Continual Progression Checks - Once all of the above has been discussed and you feel as though progress is being made, we can run continual progression checks to ensure we’re on the right path. Throughout the process, communication is very much key because we need to know how you’re feeling, how you feel before, during, and after the exercises at home, whether you feel improvement is being made, and more. With all this information available, we can assess how much longer the treatment is required and when we can move into stage three.
Chiropractic Corrective Tips
During the corrective stage, we should tell you that the appointments will not be as frequent as they were during the first stage. As we’ve noted throughout, the exercises and the time between appointments is very much a key cog in the wheel. If you can master this time, the appointments become more valuable and this all combines to a corrected spinal system.
In addition to this, you may also experience small flare-ups during the treatment. At times, people worry about these flare-ups and think the treatment isn't working but this isn't the case. At this point, your body hasn't fully healed so you can expect a little resistance but the most important thing to remember is that you’re on the road to recovery. If you’ve been suffering for the best part of your life, we can’t expect your body to just give in and assume a different position within a couple of weeks.
Depending on your issue and how long you’ve suffered, this phase of treatment can range from a few months to over a year. However, you should see improvements and regular communication with our team can keep you confident moving forward. Once we’re both happy, we can take x-rays, show you the difference between before and after, and then progress to stage three!
